Southwestern College Sun senior staff writer Nickolas Furr was named National College Reporter of the Year by The Associated Collegiate Press at its annual National College Media Convention in New Orleans. Furr was selected from all print and broadcast journalists at two-year institutions in the United States and Canada.

Also honored were Amanda L. Abad for sports writing and the team of Albert Fulcher, Ernesto Rivera, and Serina Duarte for multicultural reporting.

SWC journalism students were the biggest winners at the San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism banquet, taking 17 of the 33 awards in the College Division. Staff members also earned three awards in professional categories, including Marshall Murphy in sports photography, Mary York for military magazine story and David McVicker and Albert Fulcher for multicultural magazine story.

SWC earned 35 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Fall Conference in Fullerton. Each of the program’s three publication platforms were presented with conferences’ top award, General Excellence, for The Sun newspaper, theswcsun.com affiliated website and El Sol Magazine.

San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox presented journalism students a County Proclamation declaring October 31, 2013 as “Southwestern College Sun Day” in the County of San Diego. Cox said the proclamation was in recognition of the newspaper’s Gold Medal Award from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association earlier this semester. Cox told student journalists to “keep up the good work.”

“What you do here is importation and helps keep all of un informed about Southwestern College, which is a very important institution in South County,” he said.
