October 7, 2012, Bazz Khurshid, ASO Senator, led the first Southwestern College team “SWC Angels” as they walked in the Photocharity Walk and Concert at NTC Park Liberty Station in Point Loma, CA.
Photocharity raises funds to help more than 2,000 homeless youth between the ages of 12 and 17 and approximately 4,000 homeless youth between the ages of 18 and 24. Photocharity works in tandem with The Storefront, the only homeless shelter in San Diego for teens, and San Diego Youth Services.
In addition to donations and participant fees thousands of dollars were raised from donated instruments belonging to and signed by many famous musicians. A keyboard was donated from Diana Krall with a price tag of $3,600. Aaron Neville donated a guitar for $1,800. Jewell’s guitar sold for $3,600 and Natalie Cole’s guitar went for $3,600. Steve Martin donated a banjo priced at $5,400.
Three former homeless youth spoke about their experiences while being homeless. Wyatt Lowe & the Youngbloods, as well as the Kingfish Turner Band performed and a VIP breakfast was served by Rotisserie Affair Catering.
Founder Jeffrey Sitcov said Coleman College had 29 walkers and USD raised $1,900 with 18 walkers.
Though the SWC Angel Team raised only $30 with a single walker, there’s hope that next year more students and staff will join the event.
