National University is offering three months of free online classes to all California college and high school students who have been impacted by COVID-19. Southwestern College counselors support the initiative, but advise students speak with an academic counselor to assure the credits comply with their educational plan.

NU offers roughly 2,000 courses on a monthly basis in a multitude of subjects like English, Criminal Justice, and Psychology that SWC students may need to successfully transfer to a four-year university.

National University President Dr. David Andrews said the initiative aligns with NU’s mission to serve the public good by offering a quality education to all students.

“Through the expertise of our faculty and staff, we are in a unique position to act as good community partners and help mitigate the disruption of students’ academic pursuits caused by this global crisis,” he said.

Although the school recommends students to only take one course per month students with a 3.0 GPA or higher may take up to two classes per month. National University Virtual High School students can take up to three college-prep courses.

NU and NUVHS are accredited programs, but speaking with an NU counselor is recommended to assure all classes taken can transfer to the student’s chosen institution.

Southwestern College counselors said NU is a regionally accredited institution.

Nicholas Nguyen, an SWC academic counselor, highly advised students to make sure the classes they take will serve their educational purpose.

Academic Counselor Kellie Corbisiero agreed.

“[I have] previously had students transfer to NU and had no hesitations about referring students to taking classes there,” she said. “Although I can’t say with 100 percent certainty that all of them are transferable. Students should double-check with their counselor so they can see if some of the NU classes would be a good option for them.”

Specialized advisors will contact students after they apply to help them through the final steps of enrollment. NU free enrollment classes are only valid for April, May, and June 2020.
