Right-handed Patrick McGrath threw seven and a half innings, backed by a strong defense that kept Grossmont off the board.Doubts about the pitching have given way to praise as the SWC Jaguars clawed the Grossmont Griffins, 4-2.
Zeros marched across the scoreboard as McGrath and his crew pulled two double plays and forced multiple strikeouts on the increasingly frustrated Griffins.
Jag hitters had similar difficulty leaving the score 1-1 at the top of the seventh.
McGrath received an ovation from the crowd when he was relieved by Justin Kruse in the bottom of the seventh, and as the crowd came alive, so did the bats of the Gentlemen Jags.
Sammy Montalvan slugged a solo homer, Andy Swan and Cody Sos scored later runs back-to-back in the ninth inning and Kruse closed out Grossmont for the win.
The Jags lost to Palomar College on Thursday, 4-1.
