FLYING FOR THE FLY — Left-fielder Justin DiStefano dives for a fly ball, making the catch and giving the Jaguars one more out on the scoreboard during their Tuesday match against San Diego Mesa College.

Pitching may be 80 percent of baseball, but as Yogi Berra famously said, offense is the other half.

Coach Jerry Bartow’s pitching staff is hitting its stride, but his hitters are stumbling. SWC’s game against San Diego Mesa College wasted a strong complete game outing by Patrick McGrath in a painful 3-1 loss.

“Runs just killed us,” said Head Coach Jerry Bartow. “We’ve got to work on that.”

Bartow said he thinks the men have trouble getting to first base because they do not run or swing as if they already know they will make it. He can be heard from the dugout shouting, “You never know!” as Jags drop their bats and hit the dirt for first base.

The Gentlemen Jags are showing more hustle on defense.

Stunning catches by outfielders Justin DiStefano and Robert Archer in the eighth inning set Jag fans cheering. Action in the infield was nearly as smooth. Catcher Cody Sos nailed two runners at second base on laser beam throws.

Jags Saturday away game against Mesa has been moved to Friday at 2 p.m. due to rain.
