San Diego Italian Film festival (SDIFF) and the Museum of Photographic Arts in (MOPA) in Balboa Park will be screening two Italian films with English subtitles “Diciotto anni dopo” (“Eighteen Years Later”) by Edoardo Leo on Feb. 23 and “Basilicata Coast to Coast” by Rocco Papaleo on March 22. Both films screen at 7 p.m. The SDIFF was established to promote Italian culture through films.
“I love the fact that San Diego is open to many communities and cultures, such as the Italian Film Festival,” said Professor Dinorah Guadiana-Costa, professor of Spanish. “I thoroughly have enjoyed attending when my schedule permits and have learned a lot from Professor Pasquale Verdicchio’s film presentations.”
Italian cinema has played an important part in presenting historical events dating back to the Unification of Italy in the 1860s with Luchino Visconti’s classic “Senso.” During the 1940s Italy produced great neorealism films such as Roberto Rossellini’s “Roma, città, aperta.”
The SDIFF is an exceptional opportunity for students studying Italian and people interested in Italian culture to get an authentic image of past and present Italy, its society, languages and traditions,” said Silvia Kading, a SWC Italian instructor.
Deborah Klochko, director of MOPA, and Dr. Victor Laruccia, executive director of SDIFF, collaborated to use MOPA as the venue for the festival. Klochko said she welcomed the opportunity to host the festival to share amazing films with San Diego’s audiences.
