There are two open positions in the Associated Student Organization (ASO).
Positions for Senator of Otay Mesa and Senator of National City have not yet been filled. Students interested in becoming involved in their student government and representing either of the satellite campuses are encouraged to go through the process.
Students who would like to be considered for the position need to meet with the dean of the campus they are interested in. If the dean decides to nominate the student, they will be written a letter of recommendation. Letters are reviewed by the ASO advisor and must be finally approved by the Senate.
SWC’s ASO Senate is made up of 23 students. They act as the legislative branch of the ASO. Responsibilities include managing decisions on finance, according to the SWC website.
“The Senate serves as the final decision-making body of the ASO,” the website reads. “One of the Senate’s primary responsibilities is to authorize and appropriate all funds spent by the ASO.
ASO President Sayaka Ridley believes that the positions for satellite campuses are important as they are often overlooked, but still deserve representation.
“Every year they’re underrepresented,” she said.
Once ratified, students would serve for the Spring 2015 semester and would be able to reapply for the Fall. Requirements include being enrolled in at least nine units and having a minimum 2.5 GPA.
