SC police Chief Dave Nighswonger resigned after a three-year term with the college. He said he will finish out the school year, leaving July 1.

Nighswonger replaced former SCPD Chief Michael Cash, whose five-year tenure was filled with controversy, cover-ups, misuse of resources and negligence, according to an 18-month investigation by the Sun.

“I have some personal goals I wish to pursue and perhaps other professional opportunities in the future,” he said.

He said he decided to resign in January but told VP of Fiscal Service, Kelly Hall of the decision recently.

“It is a huge loss for our community,” she said. “We’ve been very lucky to work with him.”

Nighswonger had a 30-year career in the Orange County Sheriff’s Department before joining SCPD.  He left the position as a commander who worked directly with the sheriff. He retired in 2014 and taught for the California Police Officers Association.

Nighswonger, known as Cap’n Crunch on campus after he won a 2019 Halloween competition, attempted to make a clean exit.

“I tried to time my departure at the best time for the college and the police department,” he said. “I’m sure the school will be able to find another good cereal.”
