Award-winning playwright, poet and screenwriter Josefina Lopez, creator of “Real Women Have Curves,” will conduct a talk back with the audience following the opening night performance of her play “Simply Maria or The American Dream.” The show opens Nov. 29 at 7:30 pm in the Mayan Hall Theater.
Directed by theatre instructor Ruff Yeager, “Simply Maria” will open a series of lectures on the challenges of being a Chicana called “Mi Historia, Mi Sueños.”
Other scheduled lecturers are governing board trustee Norma Hernandez on Nov. 30 and former state assemblywoman Mary Salas Dec. 2.
Lopez will also give a free lecture on Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. in Mayan Hall titled “Culture Clash: The Influences and Conflicts of Mexican and American Mainstream Culture on the Life of a Chicana Writer,” followed by a book signing. Lopez’s books “Real Women Have Curves” and “Hungry Woman in Paris” are now available at the campus bookstore.
“Simply Maria or the American Dream” runs from Nov. 29 – Dec. 4. Tickets go on sale Nov. 21. Cost is $12 general admission, $8 for students, seniors and SWC staff. Call (619) 482-6367 for information.
