No member of the men’s water polo team has made any claims to walking on water, but it has been a season of miracles for the once-downtrodden aqua athletes. Even a loss to Palomar College could not dampen the spirits of the speedo-sporting water warriors, who have already racked up 10 wins, it’s most in years.
With seven freshman and three sophomores, coach Jorge Ortega’s young and inexperienced team has already equaled his win total of his first two seasons at the helm, so the future looks bright even after a 21-11 dunking by Palomar.
Powerful Palomar scored early and the Jags were forced to play from behind the rest of the match. The Comets controlled the tempo and played aggressively, which lead to steals and points.
The Jaguars were often forced to defend their side of the pool. In the fourth period the Jags offense finally clicked and played with more intensity, but it was too late. Ortega said he was disappointed by the outcome of the game, but saw moments of good play.
“The Jags did not roll over and fought hard the entire game,” he said. “We wanted to control Palomar’s offense and protect the ball.”
The Jags will play against Miramar College on Nov. 2.
