Gooey Gear—Materials you’ll need for this fun, gooey DIY project. Replace the balloon with a Ziplock baggie.

A lot of us have time on our hands with the closure of Southwestern’s campus. I do not plan to leave my house—I hope you are with me on that—so I am expanding my DIY skills. Some ideas I found looked too complicated for someone who does not have wood planks and a pasta maker laying around at home. Instead, I will share weekly crafts and recipes that can be made without breaking the bank or risking a trip to the store. If you enjoy the suggestions, post a picture and tag @theswcsun on social media and use #TheSunAtHome.
This week: Ziplock Fidget Slime
Okay, we can’t all be Martha Stewart. This DIY was originally supposed to be about making a do-it-yourself stress ball.
Didn’t happen…but the result was still pretty cool.
Everything was going perfectly until I attempted to pour the slime into a balloon like the directions said. Meltdown! It was tricky and super messy. It was also unexpectedly funny.
Putting slime into a balloon is like herding oiled cats in an ice rink. I tried a spoon, a funnel and helping hands, but nothing worked. I ended up putting the slime in a ziplock baggie and calling it a day.
It was a good day. The ziplock fidget slime does its job well, and is a good distraction when anxiety and stress kicks in. It can also be placed in the freezer and turned into an ice pack, which has been useful on hot days.
Materials Needed:
½ cup of school glue
½ cup of water
Food coloring:
¼ teaspoon of baking soda
1 tablespoon of contact lense solution
1 ziplock baggie
A bowl
A mixing spatula
Measuring cups
Tablespoon/teaspoon measurer

Directions:
Mix water and glue.
Take a bowl and mix ½ cup of water and ½ cup of glue. Mix together till it is completely combined together. Make sure to add the exact amount of both water and glue, you don’t want it too watery.
Three drops of food coloring in water and glue mixture.
Next add three drops of food coloring. Go easy. Too much can cause your mixture to stain your hands.Stir in ¼ teaspoon of baking soda, which helps to make your slime form. You can add more baking soda if you want firmer slime.Slime for ziplock. Next add one tablespoon of contact solution. Keep mixing until the slime no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl. If your slime is too sticky, slowly add a few additional drops of contact solution. Let the slime still for three minutes so all chemicals combine. You should notice an improvement in consistency.
Finished ziplock fidget slime DIY.
Scoop your slime into a small ziplock baggie and you’re done! As you can see in the photo, there’s some slime on my surface due to my failed attempts to funnel it into a balloon. Don’t make the same mistake, unless you want a big ol’ mess!
