Like other American colleges, businesses and public events, Southwestern College is on a coronavirus hiatus. All campuses are considered closed for the rest of the semester. The Sun will keep a log of Frequently Asked Questions relating to the coronavirus on our website throughout the closure. How long is the school closed for?

Classes will remain online for the rest of the semester. Administrators are planning for summer courses to be online as well. Updated: March 18, 11:50 a.m.

Will I get a refund if I drop my classes?

Some students may receive a refund and a “W” on their transcript if they email Admissions and Records at admissions@swccd.edu. The district will determine all cases individually. Updated: March 17, 12:35 p.m. An earlier version of this statement said all students will receive a refund and a “W” on transcripts according to district officials, but they have since said they will handle withdraws and refunds on a case-by-case determination.

Are all future events cancelled? 

All in-person events have been canceled, postponed or are in the process of finding online solutions. Updated: March 22, 4:02 p.m. An earlier version of this statement said Commencement and scholarship ceremonies were cancelled. The updated version is stated above.

Is Commencement cancelled?

Commencement is not cancelled. Administrators plan to send out a survey to graduating students after spring break asking for input on how they want the ceremony to be held. The survey asks if students are interested in a virtual commencement or postponing the commencement. Updated: March 22, 4:02 p.m

What health precautions is the college taking to combat the virus? 

In addition to in-person classes being transitioned to Canvas, Southwestern College has also scheduled a deep cleaning of the campus from March 16-23.

Will this impact our financial aid?

No, whatever money you have been allotted will still be yours, and students will continue to get their scheduled disbursements.

Will I still be able to graduate? 

Classes will still be held online, meaning it will not affect your credits.

Will buses still go to campus? 

Public transportation is still running and is making its regular stops on campus. Updated: March 22, 4:02 p.m  An earlier version of this statement said buses will no longer come on campus. The updated version is stated above.

Will we be fined for overdue books with the library?

No. Library employees will work with students to resolve overdraft fees when campuses reopen.
