When I think of bakeries in Chula Vista, I don’t exactly imagine myself in a fine European cake bakery but when I take that first bite into a Hans & Harry’s chocolate covered Éclair and flakes of bread coated in sweet Bavarian cream hit my taste buds, I know it’s real.

Hans & Harry’s Bakery is located right on Bonita Road and was established in 1991 making this year a whole 20 years of some of the most delicious pastries in the South Bay.

After stopping by last week, I picked up an embarrassing number of tasty picks, obviously that chocolate Éclair I was reminiscing of earlier was on the list, a slice of white chocolate mousse cake, a Belgian chocolate truffle slice, a slice of cheesecake and a fresh fruit tartlet.
Desserts fall into several categories, your own personal favorite, a classic, the “healthier” choice, “it’s good but too sweet for me,” and “that hits the spot.”

First up to bat is the Belgian Chocolate Truffle cake. Ganache icing on the outside, chocolate cake on the inside and two thick layers of chocolate truffle filling in between. This is for the inner chocoholic. One bite could send you into a sugar coma. The kind that has you bent over with a stomachache asking “how can this be so good, yet so deceiving?” –It’s good, but too sweet for me.
